"The best
predictor of your employee's future behaviors is his/her relevant past behaviors."
Stephen Robbins
Managers mostly
pay attention to people characteristics for recruitment, but actually
what matters for them is their behaviors. Characteristics are not good
predictors of behaviors. Because:
1) People's
behaviors are heavily influenced by environment, specially new and abnormal
ones. They may show different behaviors than their characteristics in workplace
due to organizational culture and environment.
2) People
can adapt their behavior based on the new conditions.
So how can
recruiters predict candidates' behaviors as accurate as possible?
As Stephen
Robbins said, recruiters should explore candidates' relevant past behaviors and
performance. This could be done by using STAR model. Spend most of the
interview period asking about situations relevant to the job offer and your
organization culture and find out how the candidate reacted to that situation
and what the result was.
This kind of
structured interview is the best predictor and help you improve your prediction
by 63%. To become 100% sure, you need a proper and mature onboarding
process.
